Double Fine Updates Adventure Backers, Notch Updates Psychonauts 2 Hopefuls

Posted 16 Feb 2012 in Apple, News, PC by

I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO TELL YOU ABOUT MY NEW GAME.

It has certainly been an exciting few weeks for beloved developer Double Fine. Shortly after Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson offered to fund a sequel to their cult classic platformer Psychonauts, Double Fine took to crowd-funding website Kickstarter to gague interest in a new adventure game. Fans completely funded 200% of the Adventure game’s development costs overnight.

Today, we get updates on both of the projects.

First, Double Fine founder Tim Schafer plopped down in his office to tell us about some of the ways they will use the substantial funding they are receiving from Kickstarter.

Regarding language support, Schafer confirmed that Double Fine Adventure will be fully voiced in English with localized subtitles in French, Italian, German, and Spanish.

While only a PC release was promised initially, the extraordinary amount of cash flowing into Double Fine’s coffers (currently nearing $2 million) has ensured versions for Mac, Linux, iOS and Android as well. Current backers of the game will also get a DRM-free version of the game.

Now, on Psychonauts 2.

While the news on Double Fine Adventure should get us excited for the future of the game, potential Psychonauts 2 backer Notch posted on his blog today to cool down the internet’s excitement for the long-awaited sequel.

In his post, Notch clarifies that he has only spoken with Tim informally a few times up until now, and serious negotiations have not begun. The financial requirement for a Psychonauts sequel is also, “three times higher” than what Notch was expecting, though there are unidentified third parties who are also willing to throw down for the game’s creation.

Basically, we shouldn’t be too excited for a follow-up to Psychonauts just yet. The gears haven’t even started turning.

However, we have an awesome multiplatform point-and-click adventure game to look forward to from Double Fine, and that is because of you. Feels awesome, doesn’t it?
