Game Rental through Netflix Finally Put to Rest

Posted 27 Jan 2012 in News by

Netflix has been having a bit of a weird year, what with their decision to spin out mail rentals into its own service coming and then cancelling the idea after everyone said responded with “what?” and a cancelling of their accounts. With that announcement, though, also came the announcement that game renting was coming, and then we promptly didn’t hear a single thing about that.

During an earnings call, though, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced that Netflix is doing alright, and game rentals are being officially cancelled before they even began.

Looks like the best thing for getting your rentals in without the hassle of having to leave the house continues to rest with Gamefly, and some newer services like OnLive could potentially do a lot to fill the space as well.

Hmm. Don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand, I wish there was something to challenge Gamefly, but on the other, I want Netflix to stick to what it knows and does well.

They’re trying to get rid of disc mailing as it is, so adding in a new service to that would be the most counter-productive thing they could possibly do.
